Vibes

I have never paid much attention to the concept of vibes before my time in Romania, but little did I know, that was about to change. Drastically.

I always associated the term vibe with LA, hippies from the 70’s or people in hostels in Bangkok.

We started working at a school just outside of Bucharest and for the first time in a long time we would have flatmates. However, we would never know who they were going to be or when they would arrive. Rather odd walking downstairs to a stranger in the house who now lives with you but hey, you got to roll with the punches.

Everyone we lived with was from Australasia. Turns out they are mad into vibes in that part of the world. Like, really. Mad into your vibe

As we would float around the house the topic of vibes would be brought up rather frequently, with the discussion of vibes happening almost every day. Sometimes a few times a day. With vibes being mentioned to us a lot they started to bleed into me and Alona’s psyche and one day after work at the kitchen table Alona uttered the sentence;

‘How’s your vibe today?’

This was the beginning of the end for me and Alona. We started to talk about other people's vibes and it started to seem really normal to just casually talk about vibes.

What no one warned me about is once you start using the term vibe, there is no going back. It’s a very slippery slope, once someone points out your vibe, you are stuck with a vibe forever. That vibe can change, too. You can have good vibes, bad vibes, spicy vibes, dicey vibes, happy vibes, sad vibes. There is a whole range of vibes to choose from. However once you are aware of your vibe all you can think about is vibes (this may also be cause we are in lockdown and there is nothing to do but talk about our vibes.

Now having been introduced to my vibe, I am desperately trying to get rid of it. The vibes are consuming my life and speech. In the mornings Alona will come through and tell me about her vibe. The thing about vibes is when you wake up with a bad vibe it takes all day to fix your vibe. Today Alona has walked around the house about 100 times talking about her vibes.

I think we have finally cracked in lockdown and I am desperately hoping the term vibe is only in my vocabulary for the course of lockdown. Either that or me and Alona are going to sound like total wanky tools.

Anyway sending positive vibes your way x
